A Hero's Call to Serve

Gunnery Sergeant Jake Taylor answered the call to serve his country with extraordinary dedication. As a United States Marine, he completed three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan from 2004 to 2008. He stood shoulder-to-shoulder with fellow warriors in defense of freedom.

Like many who have worn the uniform, Jake later faced the invisible wounds of war. In 2015, he sustained a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). This injury brought challenges like short-term memory issues, severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and difficulties with executive functioning and social reasoning. These struggles are real and profound. They test even the strongest among us—yet they do not define the warrior.

Finding a Loyal Companion

In his journey of healing and recovery, Jake found a loyal partner who would never leave his side: Freedom Dog Tobin. A black male Labrador Retriever, Tobin joined the Freedom Dogs program in May 2016. He was named in honor of a heroic Vietnam-era Navy Fleet Marine Force Corpsman awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star with Combat Valor. Tobin became Jake’s faithful shadow and constant companion.

Their bond began when Tobin was just six months old. Through the positive, specialized training provided by Freedom Dogs, Jake guided Tobin through new experiences with patience and encouragement. In those moments of teaching and trust-building, Jake discovered powerful tools for his own recovery. The hands-on work of positive behavioral training with Tobin inspired Jake to develop his own methods of cognitive behavioral therapy. These methods were rooted in the same principles of patience, reinforcement, and partnership that helped both of them thrive.

A Unique Partnership

Freedom Dogs welcomed Jake into its family around 2016 through its unique partnership with the Marine Corps’ Wounded Warrior Battalion-West at Camp Pendleton. This collaboration is the only ongoing one of its kind. Freedom Dogs, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2006 by Beth Russell, RN, provides custom-trained specialty service dogs completely free of charge to active-duty service members and veterans. Their primary needs are PTSD and/or TBI.

These are not emotional support animals or therapy dogs. They are highly trained partners capable of life-changing tasks tailored to each warrior. They can alert to oncoming PTSD episodes, retrieve dropped items, wake their warrior from nightmares, provide deep pressure for comfort, act as a barrier against overwhelming crowds, and offer balance support as a brace. The dogs live with dedicated volunteers from eight weeks old and complete two years of specialized training before being paired with a warrior. Freedom Dogs covers every expense for the dog’s entire life, reflecting profound respect for both the animal and the hero it serves.

The Impact of Tobin

For Jake, Tobin has been far more than a service dog. He has been a source of steady presence, renewed confidence, and hope. Tobin helps ease isolation, supports daily functioning, and opens the door to greater social connection and independence. The 24/7 support from Freedom Dogs’ volunteer trainers reinforced that Jake and Tobin were never alone. They became part of a true family dedicated to healing.

Inspired by Tobin's unwavering loyalty, Jake pursued new horizons. He earned his undergraduate degree at Winston-Salem State University, with Tobin by his side every day. Following Winston-Salem State, Jake was accepted into Wake Forest University, one of the nation's top business schools. He seized the opportunity, completing his MBA, again with Tobin as his constant companion.

A New Chapter in Life

Returning home, Jake joined his family's 40-year-old restaurant business. Drawing on his new expertise, he got to work rebuilding the company website, revamping menus, and conducting a pricing elasticity study. He adjusted prices and made other strategic decisions that resulted in net profits soaring 278% in a single year. His innovative work earned him a nomination for Wake Forest University's Business Analytics Impact Award.

Jake Taylor’s story is one of courage, resilience, and purpose. It reflects the very heart of Freedom Dogs’ mission: speeding recovery and enhancing the lives of wounded military heroes through the life-changing bond of specially trained service dogs. In honoring Jake’s service, his challenges, and his determination to help others, we also honor every warrior who has given so much—and every devoted canine partner like Tobin who stands ready to walk beside them.

Join the Mission of Hope

Freedom Dogs continues this vital work today, having assisted dozens of warriors and trained dozens of dogs over more than 20 years.
